MichaelGallagherLucyCampbellTheCupofTea Michael Gallagher audio 78rpm Irish bagpipes solo, Arthur P. Kenna - piano. Gallagher was a Leitrim flute player who learned the pipes in America. His piping setting of Lucy Campbell differs greatly in places from that recorded by Michael Coleman, which is now standard. This setting was transcribed in both the Dance Music of Willie Clancy and Ceol Rince Na Eireann Vol. 2, in the latter taken from the piping of Andy Conroy, a Roscommon musician who knew Gallagher in New York City and recorded a pair of duets with him on a homemade recording early in the 50's. Ceol Rince Vol 2 also has Conroy's playing of Gallagher's setting of the Cup of Tea. Gallagher's playing of both of these tunes has also been transcribed in An Piobarie, the journal of Na Píobairí Uilleann, the pipers' club based in Dublin. His chanter often goes into the second octave in unexpected places; with a strong reed staccato phrases can be employed in the bottom of the first octave without the chanter jumping the octave.
